Pau-Brasil is a red colored tree and it is probable that it was named after "brasa" (embers).
When Brazil was discovered, it was named "Ilha de Santa Cruz". As the years passed, the Portuguese realized it was not an island and renamed it "Terra de Santa Cruz".
But Pau-Brasil was very important to the colony's economy and, therefore, the Portuguese decided to rename the country Brazil.
Every Brazilian kid learns this when they are seven and just because some stupid people defend that "The etymology of Brazil remains unclear", it doesn't mean the question should invalidated. Some people also believe the moon-landing was fake. Does this mean that questions about this topic will be invalidated?

Sorry, but that question SUCKS! The "Which is not" questions are horrible for the simple reason that you need to find (up to) four answers to answer one question. Not to mention, who the hell is José Saramago?

If it were up to me, I would turf 80% of the "which is not" style questions.

You are entitled to dislike "Which is not" questions. I can't say I like them myself. But they are valid.

Regarding your ignorance about José Saramago, I feel sorry for you. He is simply one the most important writers of the 20th century. He is also a literature Nobel Prize winner...

As to winners of the Nobel Prize in literature, I think very few people know more than one or two, if any of them.

The Nobel Price is not awarded for selling many books, or being widely known.

Personally I read a lot of books, but had no idea José Saramago was a writer let alone a winner of the Nobel Price in literature, prior to reading this post.

And I must agree with Viridel that those "which is not" questions are generally not good, as they require a lot of research for people that do not happen to know them. This is specially true for questions about books, film, and music involving productive artists.

I'd seen a lot of 'how is this spelled' questions lately, so I made my own.

I didn't evaluate this one, but I know I toss back questions where there writer marks the correct answer in the choices. In this case the correct answer is the only one capitalized.

I saw one "who wrote iliad and odyssey" and can t say I saw any simpson references:)

Unless you count countless troy/300 questions in the same group I think the area is hardly covered.

There have been a few Simpson's questions, but obviously not as many as there have been about classical literature. With the "part of the database" evaluation, you can ask another question right away.

I guess that would be considered a spelling error but just for the record if you type SNOWBIRDS into google it comes up #1 and if you type it in as SNOW BIRDS then it is #3 link and number 1 is something about old people who like to drink cocktails while driving thru the Arizona deserts in giant, expensive, transformer like motorhomes!!!
