What makes a spider a spider?
1421. hozzászólás - 2010.06.29. 06:44:37
What makes a spider a spider?

The "correct" answer for the question is definitly wrong.
"It has eight legs" is defined as the right answer.

If this would be right, all scorpions would be spiders because they have eight legs.
Scorpions are definitely not spiders...

Scientifically spiders are animals by the category of weaving spiders.
By mistake, but scientifically incorrect, sometimes other classes of animals with spider like appearance are named as spiders. Examples are:
Hooded tickspider
Camel spider

The scientifically correct answer is: "It is able to weave for it's whole lifetime"

"whole lifetime" is a necessary part of the answer because caterpillars are weaving, too...

How old is the universe?
14 billion years
14 million years
14 trillion years
31 million years

THIS IS INCORRECT, BAD QUESTION.
If you are searching by Google, you can find different theories about age of universe, f.eg. on the page http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0106/ you can read ....."Most astronomers would agree that the age of the Universe - the time elapsed since the "Big Bang" - is one of the "holy grails of cosmology". Despite great efforts during recent years, the various estimates of this basic number have resulted in rather diverse values. When derived from current cosmological models, it depends on a number of theoretical assumptions that are not very well constrained by the incomplete available observational data. At present, a value in the range of 10-16 billion years [1] is considered most likely. But now, an international team of astronomers [2] has used the powerful ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) and its very efficient spectrograph UVES to perform a unique measurement that paves the way for a new and more accurate determination of the age of the Universe. They measured for the first time the amount of the radioactive isotope Uranium-238 in a star that was born when the Milky Way, the galaxy in which we live, was still forming. It is the first measurement ever of uranium outside the Solar System."

http://www.believersweb.org/view.cfm?ID=933: ..." The Jewish calendar tells us that we are now living in the 5759th year since creation. The latest scientific studies and hypothesis suggest otherwise. While accounts vary, the number which is most generally accepted amongst scientists in terms of their speculation as to when the universe came into being, is 15 billion years. It would seem as though any intelligent and G-d fearing physicist would now face serious problems concerning his knowledge. Any sort of attempted reconciliation would only further subjugate one or the other, and yet if one is proved false, than what is to become of the validity of the entire nature of the other?"

religous opinions aside for this question, since just about every religion and almost every ancient culture says something different. This is obviously a science question s5jst. Being such a majority of scientists agree that the universe is at least 14 billion years old since that is how far light has travel to us from the center of the universe. Of course time will change this as we become more scientifically advance. Aren't you being a bit nit picky here?

Who is the main opponent of Sherlock Holmes?
Jack the Ripper
Dorian Gray
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Professor Moriarty

Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories about Holmes, and as I found Moriarty appeared in only two of the 60 Sherlock Holmes tales by Conan Doyle. Only dr. Watson and Holmes housekeeper Mrs. Hudson constantly occurring, so you can't say that Professor Moriarty is the main opponent of Holmes.

You missed the first part of my thinking, which is not based on religion: "..the range of 10-16 billion years", but if you keep searching by google, you could find more different answers. Maybe the answer would be acceptable if the question was "approximately"....

And YES, I am "a bit nit picky here". Many of my much better questions rejected for various reasons

What kind of animal is a Tursiops Truncatus?

Uh...well....technically, all the answers are WRONG...

Why?
Because it is that animal....not a "KIND OF"

It's the Scientific Name (Latin) for the animal itself...no other animal is a Tursiops Truncatus.

....that's like asking "What kind of software is Mac OS X?"
and having the correct answer to be "Apple"

Are ya'll paying attention here?

Oh...and to respond to this:

Which food of these foods contains the highest source of carbohydrates?

Potatoe
Cucumber
Lettuce
Tomatoe

You missed the key words: " food of these foods" not...." foods that are listed on some random list from out on the internet"
No offense but...you should have tried this list:

http://www.weightlossforall.com/carbohydrates-vegetables.htm

All values are calculated from raw vegetables.
(yes, cucumbers and tomatoes are not technically vegetables but....well...that isn't the issue being discussed.)

Disclaimer: that was not my question anyhow, just stating that research should be done thoroughly before debates are posted.

When was Big Ben in London built?
1559
1288
1654
1734

None of these answers are correct because the question is assuming the wrong thing.

The first clock tower was built in 1288 but the present one was built in 1835 after the old tower was burnt down. Despite misuse, the name Big Ben applies to the bell inside the tower. This was first cast in 1856 then re-cast after cracking in 1859.

Again, not my question...

BUT...
In at least 4 other shorts (The illustrious Client, The Empty House, His Last Bow, and The Norwood Builder) Doyle has Holmes drone on and on about the Professor...

No other villain of the Holmes stories (including the short stories) is brought up as much with such an admirable regard, as Moriarty was.

You should read "The Final Problem"

You miss an important point here: this question is a mess. What does "food of these foods" mean? and how can a potato contain a source of carbohydrates?

If it was changed to "Which of these foods has the highest contents of carbohydrates? it would make sence given the possible answers.

What is the Worlds Deadliest Snake?
Blue Krait
Australian Brown Snake
Inland Taipan <- Marked as correct
Mohave Rattlesnake

This is debatable, deadliness of a snake is determined by aggressiveness coupled with how toxic the venom is, not only the venom.

What is in the South of Iran ?
Persian Gulf
Red Sea
Aral Sea
Adriatic Sea

The Persian Gulf does not lie in Iran, part of it is Iranian water, and that part can be said to be in the South of Iran, but the question should be "What sea lies to the South of Iran?"

Where can you find world's perfect cone volcano?
Philippines <- Marked as correct
Malaysia
Egypt
Japan

There are several, Mt Fuji, in Japan is one, the US has a few, but the most perfect volcano is the one in the Philippines. It's rated as an almost perfect cone volcano.

Where is the longest highway in the world located?
Sweden
China
Germany
Canada <- marked as correct.

As the question is worded it's ambiguous.

The longest highway in the world is the Pan-American Highway at 25 000 km (15 534 mi) as of 2005. This however is not a continuous highway as part of it is served by boats.

The longest National highway is Australia's Highway 1 at over 20 000 km (12 427 mi) This highway is however a circular highway and not point to point.

The longest national highway (Point to point): The Trans-Canada Highway (the T.C.H.) (known as TCH 1 in western Canada) is 7 821 km (4 857 mi) long as of 2006.

There are other ways of defining the longest highway that will yield different results.

Blah, freakin' blah. If you take out the idiocy of religion, your own answer clearly shows the answer:
a value in the range of 10-16 billion years

So, which of the available answers fit into those guidelines?

Yeah, sure, the question could say "Approximately" and the answers could say "About" or "Around"... But don't complain about things that *really* don't matter.
