Yet another example of the fact that if you don't know a topic, you can't judge its level of specialization. The number of people on this planet who could answer that question correctly without looking it up is at least in the hundred millions. It's like the blind men and the elephant. We all just know the part of the elephant we can touch, and we have no way to judge the other parts. That's why the whole specialized thing is incredibly stupid and needs to be replaced by googleability.

Sodium is not essential to any life form. Also, I doubt chlorine is necessary for life. Besides, each and every element is deadly, so that part doesn't add any value to the question.
My overall conclusion is: nice try, I like this kind of questions, but this one just isn't correct.

Misleading here is use of "sodium" both to specify an elementary compound (metal sodium) and element in compounds (usually in form of sodium ions). For sure, metal sodium will kill if somebody eats it (even though it is pretty difficult to do) or will cause severe chemical burns in contact with skin, eyes etc.

On the other way, in form of salts it is essential for living organisms to function. This is meant in the question by stating "when combined". In the links you have found the word "ion" or "compound" is just omitted.

So, from my point of view, the question may be not strict enough for the competition in Chemistry, but is fine for this game quiz.

It is true that in most cases when water is used to extinguish fire it is the cooling effect that puts out the fire, but in some situations fire is smothered by water.

But water might cool down the burning material, but in some cases pouring water on burning material has no effect, and submerging it in water might or might not put out the fire, depending on the burning material. In fact some materials might self-ignite if they come in contact with water.

Jeopardy and Bones questions are both ok. I am familiar with Jeopardy way of game through books, films, pc games, even a music video that mentiones it and i have never actually seen this game. Also the point made for Star trek is valid, it is a main character known by that name throughout the series so not a detail. The 65% correct rate veryfies this.

Water q: Cooling of material is the main reason most fires are put out so even if at some rare cases due to the very big ammount of water is also smothered, the answer is ok. Good point on the type of fire though, changed q to Why does a camp fire dies when we put water on it?
