If the tomatoe is technically a fruit, falls into the scientific category of fruit, cannot be named among vegetables because of certain qualities that MAKE IT A FRUIT....it doesn't matter what you do with it, how you chop it up, whether you blend it or fry it or absorb it through your epidermis..ITS A FRUIT.

This question is used in so many quizzes and so many tests its become a classic to trip ignorami on. It epitomizes the "everyone believes its this, when its actually that" answer.

Its a very good question, please ignore his request. Its one thing to write a bad quiz, but quite another to question a truly epic one!

1st I never got a response to whether I answered the question right or wrong (a hunt ended just as I clicked the answer button) so I don't know what answer is marked as correct.
2nd Whatever the correct answer in the quiz, in the USA a tomato is legally a vegetable, (there is a supreme court ruling stating that,) but for the rest of us its a fruit.

The answer is fruit...and I was replying to the request by someone else that it be changed to vegetable because "I use it like a vegetable".

The issue is in the realm of science, if my country decided all bears were marsupials, that wouldn't change the fact that science has a very detailed classification system which puts them elsewhere, and that is what should be used here, as the universal answer.

Who was the first president of the United States of America?
George Washington<-- right
John Hanson

Ambiguous, John Hanson is the first president to spend a year in office so is sometimes referred to as the first president. I did get the question right, but I do think it's a little misleading.

This has been covered. Hanson's title was President of Congress, not President of the USA.

The issue is not just in the realm of science. It's in the realm of linguistics. If some committee in your country decided that all bears were marsupials, you'd be right. But if the general public in your country used the word "marsupial" to refer to a group of animals that included bears, you'd be wrong.

Besides, if you want to get technical, all fruits are also vegetables. So no matter how you approach it, the question is at least ambiguous and should be removed.

You're saying what the general public believes to be true superceeds the fact? That's what kept Europe in the dark ages.

All fruits are vegetables, but since they are a sub-classification they are separate from vegetables. A pitbull is a breed of dog and that makes it a dog, but if you ask me whether its a pitbull or a great dane, the answer is unassailable and the same applies. These quizzes are only wrong if the fact is wrong, or if it truly cannot be determined.

Tomato; fruit or vegetable, look it up anywhere and unless you've stumbled onto vague philosophizing, as we are doing now, its a cold hard fruit.

I'm saying that language is a collection of conventions. The question wording was "What is a Tomato?", not "What is a tomato scientifically classified as?". As such, the question can be legitimately interpreted as a linguistic question. In which case, common usage is enough to make "vegetable" correct.

If a subclass were separate from its superclass, it wouldn't be a subclass. Duh!

That's a totally bogus analogy. Pit bulls are not a subclass of great danes. The correct analogy would be asking you whether a pit bull (tomato) is a dog (fruit) or a mammal (vegetable). And obviously, it is both.

According to the book, The Hobbit, what is the answer to the riddle Gollum is unable to guess? What is in Bilbo's pocket?
a golden ring *
a gold coin
a daffodil
a fish

Though I have no trouble answering this one, I'd say it's a specialist knowledge.

just got this question... and it needs to be removed.

"What is the world most deadly animal?"

answers given were
Mosquito (correct according to this person)
Jellyfish
scorpion
one other i don't recal

Mosquito's are NOT the most deadly animal in the world.

The top prize for “The World Most Deadly Animal,” would go to the Box Jellyfish. It has caused at least 5,567 recorded deaths since 1954. Their venom is among the most deadly in the world. It’s toxins attack the heart, nervous system, and skin cells. And the worst part of it is that jelly box venom is so overpoweringly painful, that human victims go in shock, drown or die of heart failure before even reaching shore. Survivors experience pain weeks after the contact with box jellies.

maybe the person askig the question means what animal has the most fatalities per year in the world.. that would be a totally different question. Then it could indeed be the mosquito. but most DEADLY is not a mosquito.
deadly means lethal. A mosquito itself is not lethal, the viruses it can carry however are, but a normal mosquito is harmless if it is not infected with a virus (and many mosquito's are NOT)

Wrong, Mosquito's are the deadliest on that list since they transmit Malaria.

Each year, there are more than 250 million cases of malaria, killing between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in sub-Saharan Africa.

ImLittleJon, get off your high horse

Who was responsible for curing polio?

Fred Klenner
William MacArthur
Marvin Hudginson
Douglas P. Rutherford

According to the quiz, it is Fred Klenner. Never heard of him, and there is no such thing as a "cure" for polio. You got it, you just have to live it out.
There is a vaccine, which is probably what the author had in mind when creating the quiz, since it has virtually eliminated polio in the modern age. Jonas Salk developed one, and Albert Sabin a second one, both of which are used today.

Remove or adjust please.

i think they outsmarted themselves, the tractor they refer to is a John Deere so the question is wrong on many levels, a deer is the mommy of Bambi and has nothing to do with tractors.
